Shirt Tail Relative

I was prompted to bring today’s post forward in my publishing schedule when I read an excellent blog post by Judy G Russell, The Legal Genealogist, in which she discussed Shirt-Tail Relatives.
The first time I noted  this term was in a post from Jacquie Schattner http://seedstotree.blogspot.com who wrote A shirt tale (sic) relative is usually a distant relative but sometimes refers to a very close family friend.
